PREMIERE: DUMMY THICC - Aw Shit! (Album) + 10 Questions
Introducing DUMMY THICC – Norway’s Drumming Powerhouse Goes Solo.
Norwegian drummer Sigmund Vestrheim—better known by his larger-than-life moniker, DUMMY THICC—is making his long-awaited solo debut with “Aw Shit!”, dropping June 13 via Mutual Intentions.
Known for his work with Boy Pablo, AURORA, and the R&B collective GiddyGang, DUMMY THICC now steps into the spotlight with a 44-minute album that blends crisp hip-hop beats, lush R&B grooves, and psychedelic jazz textures. Crafted mostly during lockdown, the record is a free-spirited exploration of rhythm and collaboration.
The focus track, “Lease,” features Zimbabwean-Norwegian rapper Vuyo and was born from a sunlit jam session filled with laughter and groove. The album itself is split in two: Side A is a solo showcase, while Side B brings in collaborators like Ivan Ave and members of GiddyGang to expand the sonic palette.
Fans of Madlib, DJ Harrison, and the Ninja Tune catalog will find plenty to love here. More than just a beat tape, “Aw Shit!” is a bold and deeply personal artistic statement from one of Scandinavia’s most versatile musicians.
Dummy Thicc sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
My mom and dad gave me a drum kit when I was 5 years old! And just listening to the music in the house sparked something, also being able to try my parents instruments laying around the house. I was encouraged to practice by my parents and they never told me to be quiet if I was playing an instrument! Lucky for me! I was always fascinated by the concept of making music together just through playing the instruments together!
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
So many different influences, I would love to jam out with DJ Harrison one day! Or I can dream about jamming with D’Angelo or Stevie Wonder or something like that. Actually DJH remixed a GiddyGang (my band) song that’s coming out soon and I’m really stoked about that.
I feel lucky to be surrounded by friends that inspire and influence me a lot! And I’m very happy to be playing with them!
3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?
Other than releasing my debut as a solo artist I’m making a new GiddyGang & Vuyo record nowadays! Very excited about that! Other than that I’m always making music!! So hopefully more DUMMY THICC stuff is coming soon too!
4. How would you describe your sound?
Raw, experimental, punchy, new and familiar.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
Every day man! Being able to do what I love for a living is a blessing. I’ve been very lucky and fortunate! Hope the future holds the same vibes.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
I would say don’t worry too much. Be yourself and try to make something unique that’s very you. «Be real» kind of. Have fun! Music is fun!
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
DRAAGEN and Ultraposh.
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
There’s a Riot Going On by Sly Stone. Jay Dee a.k.a. King Dilla by J Dilla and Electric Sugar by MAGNUS BERG.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I love to cook! And hang out with my friends and my wife! Go out and look for records!
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
My computer, an SM57 and some drums.
