Adrian Quesada x Hermanos Gutiérrez - Primos (Official Video)
Adrian Quesada and Hermanos Gutiérrez Unite on Spellbinding New Single “Primos”.
Amid the creation of his highly anticipated new album Boleros Psicodélicos II, Grammy-winning producer and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Quesada has joined forces with Swiss-Ecuadorian guitar duo Hermanos Gutiérrez to release “Primos,” a hypnotic new single out now on ATO Records.
Steeped in suspense, groove, and the dusty textures of spaghetti western cinema, “Primos” captures the essence of Quesada’s singular style—where Latin soul collides with psychedelic nuance. The track was born spontaneously during a daylong jam session at South by Southwest, as the three musicians tapped into an instinctive, almost telepathic connection. “Hermanos Gutiérrez and I have a deep connection which feels like family,” says Quesada. “So the song is called ‘Primos’ (cousins). We did this one from scratch, just jamming on the floor together.”
Estevan and Alejandro Gutiérrez echo the sentiment, recalling the immediate bond they felt with Quesada after inviting him to their first Austin performance in 2022. That spark soon evolved into an artistic kinship. “Adrian Quesada’s Boleros Psicodélicos is a truly beautiful album,” they said. “Being part of Volume 2 with our track ‘Primos’ is an incredible honor.”
Accompanied by a kaleidoscopic music video, “Primos” takes listeners on a surreal, guitar-laden journey, blending nostalgic textures with forward-thinking production. It also serves as a powerful entry point into Boleros Psicodélicos II, the sequel to Quesada’s critically acclaimed 2022 album that first reintroduced audiences to the underappreciated genre of Latin American balada.
Emerging in the late 1960s and 70s, balada is known for its romantic drama, cinematic flair, and emotional depth—elements that Quesada expertly reinterprets with modern arrangements and genre-blurring collaborations. Boleros Psicodélicos II, due out June 27 on ATO Records, pushes this mission further, celebrating and reshaping a style that has long influenced the Texas-based artist.
Produced by Quesada and Alex Goose (Aaron Frazer, Childish Gambino), the album assembles a stellar cast of vocalists from across Latin America and beyond, including Cuco, Angélica Garcia, Daymé Arocena, Gepe, Monsieur Periné, Ed Maverick, iLe, and more. Each artist brings their own flavor, while Quesada works behind the scenes as what NPR’s Alt.Latino calls “a wizard of just finding the magical little sauce of each artist, and bringing it to the fore.”
Lead singles “Ojos Secos” (feat. Cuco) and “No Juego” (feat. Angélica Garcia) have already offered glimpses into the expansive sonic world of Boleros Psicodélicos II. “No Juego,” in particular, was praised by Remezcla for blending old-school hip-hop beats and trip-hop atmospheres into something that feels both timeless and entirely new.
With “Primos,” Adrian Quesada and Hermanos Gutiérrez showcase not only their virtuosity, but their deep mutual respect and artistic alignment. It’s a striking preview of what’s to come—music that honours the past while charting bold, emotional new territory.
