A$H. - Low Key (Album) + 10 Questions
A$H. Steps Into the Spotlight with Debut Album Low Key.
Memphis-based Pop/R&B artist A$H. is done playing the background. After lending her voice to legends like Janelle Monae, Solange, John Legend and Summer Walker, she finally takes centre stage with Low Key — her long-awaited, genre-bending debut album, out now.
Crafted alongside her husband and producer Terrence Brown (of All Cows Eat Grass), Low Key is a rich blend of nostalgic synth-pop, Memphis-rooted soul, and thoughtful lyricism. It’s pure A$H.: confident, feminine, and quietly powerful.
Highlights include the 80s-tinged single “ooo baby,” a dreamy visual homage to Purple Rain filmed in L.A., and “Leave Me Alone,” an anthemic reminder to keep the faith and drown out the noise. Then there’s “MUA” — cheeky on the surface, but layered with deeper reflections on identity and image. The title track, “Lowkey,” perfectly captures the album’s essence: protecting your fire by keeping it sacred.
A$H., a Spelman College alum with a theatre background, has been quietly carving her own path for a decade — from The Perfect EP in 2015 to 2021’s Pri$$¥. Now, in what she calls a full circle moment, Low Key marks a new chapter.
In her own words: “The beauty in being low key is that it gives the room an opportunity to see you and elevate you, versus you trying to force the moment… I actually believe my time is close — and I am grateful to finally be in this headspace.”
Give Low Key a listen — it’s not just an album, it’s a slow-burning glow-up.
A$H. sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:
1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
My relationship with music began honestly. My grandmother was a pianist and singer and my mother is an amazing vocalist as well. The story is, as a toddler, not only was I singing but I was noticeably memorizing musical sequences, harmonies, specific instruments and samples. To this day, I can hear a song and tell you where parts of that song are in other songs even from a different era. It’s definitely a gift. As I got older and recognized my talent and began writing songs around 7, music was the place I’d go to for comfort and my safe place to dream. I began dreaming about people hearing the music and them feeling how I feel when I’m immersed in it and that purpose within carries me to this day.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
I grew up in the 90s so I was in a really sweet spot when it came to great music.
So many eras inspired and influenced me to create well. Artists Brandy, Aaliyah, TLC, Donna Summer, Robyn, Mariah Carey, Kim Burrell, SWV, Neon Indian, Slick Rick, Pharrell, All Cows Eat Grass, Selena, Prince, Rihanna, H.E.R. and Janet Jackson the list goes on.
I’d love to work with Robyn, Pharell and Justin Bieber to name a few, in the future.
3. Can you tell us about your album ‘Low Key’?
Low Key is a beautiful body of work. I’d say my best. As an artist, it remains true to my core of femininity, love and dream chasing. 9 songs and 9 stories. I believe Low Key has something for everyone. It is Pop, it is soul, it is R&B, it is Hip Hop, it is singer songwriter. It’s my truth mixed with the dream I began building upon since I was 7.
Everyone can find identity on that album.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I grew up in church so there’s this thread of faith that comes out in my songwriting and gospel influence interwoven into some of the runs, harmonies and sounds I use in the songs. I’d say it’s a fusion of Pop, Soul, Gospel and R&B. You will dance, you will feel light, you may cry and you’ll definitely be inspired.
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
My proudest moments are going on tour. Touring and performing live are when it feels real. All the recording, photoshoots and playlists are what lead you to the stage where people actually pay to experience me and support my art. I’m always honored to hit the stage.
6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
Be authentic, create an identifiable sound, remain gracious, take inspiration breaks and try not to get caught up in the numbers. Have fun!
7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?
An R&B artist named “Girlfriend.” Love her sound, she can really sing and happens to be my cousin. Check her out!
8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?
VEGA INTL. Night School by Neon Indian and Low Key by me.
9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?
I’m such a wife so I love cooking, organizing and keeping a beautiful home. I’m also really big on health and fitness and workout daily. I love finding amazing books to dig into. That is my life.
10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?
My diary, Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa syrup (a vocal syrup) in hot water and candles.
