Yaya Bey returns with do it afraid, her newest album released via Drink Sum Wtr. The project is a vibrant and vulnerable celebration of life’s joys—love, humour, movement, connection—even in the face of uncertainty. Sonically, Bey stretches her palette, working with a dynamic roster of collaborators including BADBADNOTGOOD, Exaktly, Butcher Brown, and guests like Rahrah Gabor and Nigel Hall.

Accompanying the release is a new video for “spin cycle,” a tender, grounded track Yaya calls “a working class love song.” The album flows seamlessly through sounds and moods—whether it’s the rapid-fire edge of “wake up b*tch,” the intimacy of “raisins,” or the soca-tinged “merlot and grigio” paying homage to her Bajan heritage.

Following a steady ascent that included 2022’s acclaimed Remember Your North Star and last year’s Ten Fold (a Pitchfork Best New Album), Yaya continues to prove she’s one of R&B’s most vital voices.
