Imani Griffon - Rude (Official Video)

Imani Griffon Releases Soul-Baring New Single ‘Rude’.

Paris-born alternative R&B artist Imani Griffon is back with her latest single Rude, a brooding, intimate track that dives deep into self-reflection and inner conflict.

Drawing from a rich musical upbringing — think B-52’s, Aretha Franklin, Massive Attack and Kelela — Imani blends the emotional depth of R&B with the edge of trip hop and experimental electronica. Her sound is raw, layered, and always evolving.

‘Rude’ unpacks the sometimes hostile voice we carry inside ourselves. “I thought I was writing another breakup song,” Imani shares, “but I realised it was about me — about the way I talk to myself, the pressure I put on myself.” Influenced by the likes of Yves Tumor, the track is equal parts introspective and cathartic.

After an impressive 2023 — performing in venues across Paris, opening for Oxmo Puccino, and making waves with her debut Take My Mind — Imani continues to shape her sonic universe with every release. ‘Rude’ is a powerful step forward. Don’t sleep on it.

Imani Griffon sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

Definitely since I was born. I grew up in a family of musicians. I started studying piano at the conservatoire when I was 5, but it was terrifying to me. That’s also when I began writing my first songs. At my parents’ house, there was always music playing FIP radio, vinyls, CDs… I grew up listening to Bobby Gentry, Air, Massive Attack, Aretha Franklin, Alex Gopher, Cat Power.. All of my parents’ music. My mom is a singer, so I naturally got into the habit of listening to music constantly, singing all the time, and composing at home. I was raised in music. I started out as a singer in a band, and later I began composing my own tracks using Logic. My dad is a bassist, so I often work with him on arrangements. For me, everything started with family.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

So many artists influence me, but I’m dying to collaborate with Kelela and Yukimi from Little Dragon. I’m deeply inspired by the way they place their voices and how the productions support them  it really resonates with my own artistic journey. I’d love to learn from them. As for producers, I truly admire the work of Tricky, Montell Fish, and of course, Thundercat. If you’re reading this I’m all yours! Lately, I also discovered Daniel Hylton Nuamah I really love what he’s doing. Ultimately, I want to collaborate more with musicians who play traditional instruments like the oud or the kora. My dream is to travel the world, meet producers and musicians from everywhere, and blend our visions to create something unique.

3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

I can’t say anything yet, but stay tuned!

4. How would you describe your sound?

Groovy but deep.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

All my first times as an artist meant a lot, but the one I’ll never forget is my very first time on stage.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

I always remind myself; stay true to your art, but remember it’s all a game. Don’t fear losing or winning. Just play.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

I’m really into this group called Spirit Blue, and also Yullola and I recently discovered Lollie! You have to give them a listen.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I’m like an old soul, I tend to listen to the same albums over and over. My go-to, everywhere and every time, is Kaleidoscope by Kelis, produced by The Neptunes, and Machine Dreams by Little Dragon. I also just discovered Nine Inch Nails’ EP Add Violence, and I’m loving it.And I’m super excited about Theodora’s Mega BBL, but it’s not out yet!

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I love to dance, and I really enjoy long walks with music in my ears.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

A hot drink, whatever it is, a clear mind, and my dad.
